What is your writing space like?

I often hear authors complain about not having peace and quiet in their writing space (workplace). I've never actually thought about my surroundings when I write. As many of you should know by now I suffer from A.D.H.D. I am all over the place. But my workspace can't be quiet. I need music, television, or even someone around me while I write. Don't get me wrong, I can write in complete silence, but the best comes out when I have other things around me.

So tell me what is your writing space/workplace like?

  1. I'm the same way. I sit on the couch with my laptop and headphones plugged in for iTunes. For some reason, tuning out the rest of the world helps the muse come out. Sometimes I get wrapped up in the songs, but usually I can get back on track.

  2. I need quiet!! But my room (repurposed dining room) is off the living rm & kitchen, so... yeah, no.

  3. I'm very similar to you in that I can't write without white noise of some kind around me. (When I'm at home, the History Channel, A&E, and Comedy Central are all favorites.) It's a holdover from college, where it was a matter of learning to write in spite of surrounding chaos or not writing at all.

  4. My husband built me a beautiful office... and I never use it. I keep my laptop upstairs in the living room and that's where I get my best writing done. I also need music. Music is a must.

  5. In my office there's a bulletin board where I pin up pictures of my characters and sometimes the setting. I love to have music playing. I make playlists for every book I write.

Drowing everything out really helps me :)
I do often find myself forgetting I am writing and focusing more on the music. Sometimes hours could go by and I noticed my blank screen. LOL

I can't a quiet house. I learned that when I first went back to school. I noticed studying in a quiet room was killing me slowly.

I wasted so much time just looking out of the window every time I heard a car pass by. The kids caught me many times looking out the window after telling them I would be busy studying.

Now see Mari I could look at the history channel when I am writing, but not when I am not writing. The topic must really be interesting to me if I am watching it just for fun. The funny thing is I thought looking at movies while writing was helpful. But after watching 3 - 4 movies in a row, the entire day was gone and no real work was done. Chaos is a good thing in the right form.

Music seems to be popular among writers who need noise. The living room is also popular for some reason. Its probably because it is the center of chaos in the house. LOL

OMG you have character pictures! I know that must really be inspiring, but I could see myself admiring them for hours. Every time someone comes around I would stop working and pointing to the pictures while talking about the plans in my stories.

As for the music thing, I can't listen to any of the songs I listened to while writing. I heard them way to many times on repeat. LOL

  10. I write best with quiet. That doesn't happen when my kids are at home so much. I have a desktop with a huge screen that I LOVE because it's so helpful when I'm revising. I have a netbook that I love for drafting, though. I tend to get distracted a lot more at my desktop, so my netbook is where the real action happens.

  11. It totally depends on what stage I'm at, but I usually always write with music on. I can edit while having the kids around, even sitting in front of the TV with them. I just might not get as much done. :) Glad to have found your blog through our lovely Miss L.J.
